Hamsterley Forest is the largest forest in County Durham and covers 4900 square acres.

The Forest is great for trail running and enjoying the local wildlife, if you’re lucky you may spot one of the Deer, Badgers or Squirrels. Starting and finishing at the Nest/Grove carpark which is up the forest drive from the main car park. The route follows well marked footpaths, forest trails and woodland tracks.

We are an eco-friendly company and, on that basis, we don’t use disposable plastic cups and don’t offer plastic race T shirts as standard – many go to waste after events and are nor recyclable, instead we are providing a 100% cotton T shirt as part of your race entry. We are actively encouraging participants to give something back to the environment which is why your race goodies are a little bit different. We are including a packet of mixed wild flower seeds or small Tree for you to plant which will encourage bees and other pollinators to visit your garden and is great for the environment.

The Race Format.

We would like our team events to capture some of the camaraderie and team spirit from the XC Harrier league which takes place during the winter months. It is our intention to encourage teams from all of the local clubs to take part. Your club may enter a team of up to 5 athletes (8 at the 24-hr race) and that club team could compete at the team event race series. There is no need for the same participants to attend each race, although there is no reason why they can’t. Over the team events each club would accumulate a total distance covered by their team of runners. For example if Derwent Valley Running club entered a team in each event, over the 36 hrs or so of competition that club may have covered 500+km. The Club with the highest total over the team events wins, and gets to take home the Trophy which will be engraved with their club name and the year that it was won. The trophy would be returned the following year and the process would continue.

Brief rules.

Solo runners, and teams of 2-5 participants complete as many loops of the 10k course as possible from the start of the race until the end. Only 1 person from each team may be allowed on the course at any time. Participants can stop to eat, drink and rest in the non-competitive area at the start/end of each lap. Full rules will be emailed to participants in due course.
